Peace-making Skills Emphasized
by Karen Tillery, Camp Director

Twenty-three children attended a Peace in Action
day camp July 23-27 at Kid’s Bible Club
congregation, Jonesboro, Arkansas. The daily
themes evolved around learning ways to improve
personal peace, peace with family and friends,
peace at school, peace in the community, and
peace in the world.

Each day the children advanced their knowledge
of peace-making skills and conflict resolution tools in the classes, which included: theme class, music, crafts and choose peace. In the Choose Peace class, campers learned ways to choose peace and also practiced by using humor to diffuse criticism; apologizing; talking about problems; getting advice; walking away; making deals; asking others to stop and waiting until they cooled off for confrontations. They also learned the importance of getting help from a trusted adult for any illegal, frightening, or dangerous conflict.

The idea for a Peace in Action camp came from
Karin Franklin Peter, Southern Field Missionary
Coordinator. Pastor Lou Ann Lasley was
instrumental in promoting and supporting the
event by coordinating transportation, meals, and
the Sunday celebration. Katie Weston and Kaycie
Tillery completed their summer of serving as interns
for the South Central States Mission Center by
teaching the craft class at the camp and helping t
he children paint a peace mural on the wall. Other
staff included: Dia Sawyer and Jessica Keasler,
music; Jimmie Turner. nurse/assistant; Janet Darty,
meal preparation; Dennis Lasley and Ken Anderson.
Choose Peace class. The SCS Mission Center supported the peace camp and is planning to sponsor another one in 2008.

Follow-up Activities
By Lou Ann Lasley, Pastor
Kid's Bible Club Congregation

It's amazing what a kids really hear when you think
they're not hearing anything. The Peace In Action
Kids have learned that kids can and are changing
the world everyday just by getting involved in their
own communities.

Since camp, we've done a class on "How the dove
became the bird of peace," about thinking of the
consequences of war before entering into it. The
kids drew peace pictures for the cover of the
Sunday Bulletins.

We're in the process of working on a wall banner with Kids around the world pictured on it. It will be called "Let's make peace together. Let's make peace forever." This will be the focus of an upcoming event for the community that we will be calling, "Celebrating Peace, with kids around the world." The kids will be doing a program for the community with skits and songs all about peace.
